4 work terms. Four work terms: the summer after second year paired with the following Winter Term 1, then the summer after third year paired with the Winter Term 1 after that. Two eight-month placements, which is the usual shape. The Calendar sets the rules (four work terms, at least one in a Winter term, and the degree must end on an academic term) but leaves the sequence to each department, so check yours for the exact placement. Work terms earn co-op course credit on your transcript and none of it counts toward the degree, which is why co-op adds a year.

A B.A.Sc. is granted after credit for every course in the program of study. That is normally four Winter Sessions at full credit load, five for Engineering Physics, and nine academic terms for Biomedical Engineering. Part-time study needs the Dean’s Office. Programs change year to year to keep engineering accreditation, so confirm against the Calendar for your entry year.
UBC CalendarStudents coming from a first year of science take APSC 100, 160 and 201, MATH 152, 253 and 255, PHYS 170, STAT 251 and 6 credits of Complementary Studies, 30 credits rather than 37. More than 26 credits of engineering transfer credit can mean entering second year directly.
UBC CalendarThe Faculty may limit registration to students in the B.A.Sc. program and prioritise by progression and graduation requirements, and enrolment in engineering elective courses may be restricted.
UBC CalendarChemical Engineering and Chemical and Biological Engineering share every course above except four: the third-year pair and the fourth-year pair chosen together. Pick the same stream in both years, or the plan will otherwise mix them.
UBC CalendarThe Calendar asks for 3 credits of Complementary Studies electives in third year and 3 more in fourth. The Department’s own curriculum names APSC 262, Technology and Society, for the third-year one, in Term 2 for Chemical Engineering and Term 1 for Chemical and Biological. It is left as a generic slot above because the Calendar page this program cites does not name it.
UBC CalendarAt least 6 of the 12 technical elective credits must come from CHBE courses, off the Department-approved list. And students who took CHBE 356 before 2021W must spend 3 of those credits on CHBE 474 specifically.
UBC CalendarCHBE 453 and 454 went from 6 credits to 8, and CHBE 481 from 3 to 4. The values used above are the current ones, so a student who started earlier should check their own year’s curriculum.
